Colombia, in collaboration with renewable energy firm Zelestra, inaugurated the La Union Photovoltaic Solar Park on Friday, a $200 million project set to supply clean energy to over 130,000 households, benefiting approximately 430,000 people. The solar park, located in Cordoba department, is part of President Gustavo Petro's energy transition agenda, aiming to diversify the country's energy matrix and combat climate change.

The park, with a capacity up to 144 MW, is now the largest solar energy project in the Cordoba department and one of the most significant in Colombia. It spans 230 hectares and is expected to prevent the emission of 168,000 tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to planting 16.8 million trees.

"With this project, we're fulfilling President Petro's vision of transforming social relations through renewable energy," said Omar Andrés Camacho, Minister of Mines and Energy. "It's not just about large-scale generation but ensuring that renewable energy meets the needs of communities across the country," he added.

During construction, 1,276 jobs were created, with priority given to local communities, employing 648 people, including 170 women. Beyond generating clean energy, the project aims to foster economic development and social integration in the region.

Leo Moreno, CEO of Zelestra, emphasized the company's commitment to high-quality renewable energy development. "La Unión is a testament to Zelestra's ability to deliver end-to-end renewable energy projects, ensuring maximum efficiency and positive community impact," he said.

The solar park aligns with Colombia's goal to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate its transition to renewable energy. By 2026, the government seeks to integrate 6 GW of renewable energy into its national grid, a key pillar of its strategy to address environmental challenges.

In his speech, Camacho highlighted the park's contribution to Colombia's renewable energy goals and the positive impact it will have on vulnerable communities. "This park is not just a symbol of sustainable development; it represents our commitment to improving the livelihoods of Colombians," he said.

The project is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing Colombia's green energy initiatives, helping the country meet its climate goals and improving the quality of life for thousands of residents.

Earlier this week, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Colombia unveiled an ambitious $40 billion investment plan to finance its planned transition from fossil fuels to clean energy.
