On Friday, the Catalan government presented its 2050 energy road map, stating that the region is going to need to install 12 GW of new renewables by 2030, reaching up to 62 GW of installed capacity by 2050 to achieve energy independence and a full decarbonization of its electricity system.
According to the energy road map, Proencat 2050, the transformation is expected to bring nearly 5 GW of wind and 7 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) by 2030, and the region’s first MW of offshore wind and battery energy storage. Catalonia is going to aim specifically to have 1 GW of offshore wind installed by 2030 and 3.5 GW by 2050.
Moreover, installations are expected to go hand-in-hand with efforts to significantly lower energy consumption, and to reduce the energy dependence on the outside to just 6.7% from today’s 94.2%. Catalonia’s target is to achieve a 30.3% reduction in final energy consumption and to lower the energy intensity by 57% by 2050 in comparison to 2017 levels.
Catalonia’s renewable energy targets are presented in the table below:
| Technology (in MW installed): | 2020 | 2030 | 2040 | 2050 |
| Hydro | 1,825.3 | 1,825.8 | 1,825.8 | 1,825.8 |
| Onshore wind | 1,271.1 | 5,234.2 | 16,939 | 23,136 |
| Offshore wind | 0.0 | 1,000 | 1,500 | 3,500 |
| Solar PV (rooftop) | 249.7 | 2,185.2 | 7,275.9 | 11,144 |
| Solar PV (other) | 0.0 | 512.6 | 2,026.6 | 2,614 |
| Solar PV (ground-mounted) | 94.8 | 4,458.8 | 13,129 | 19,394.3 |
| Other renewables (biomass, biogas, solar CSP, waste, etc.) | 116.7 | 191.8 | 270.9 | 247.4 |
| TOTAL | 3,557.6 | 15,408.4 | 42,967.2 | 61,861.4 |
| Pumped storage hydro | 534 | 2,034 | 3,534 | 3,734 |
| Battery energy storage | 0.0 | 200 | 500 | 3,500 |
According to the Catalan government, its plan is going to help preserve quality land and that new wind and solar farms are going to occupy only 2.5% of the region’s territory.
