Consumers Energy To Add 375 MW Of Solar Power Through 3 Projects

Consumers Energy Co. said Nov. 17 that it reached agreements to add 375 MW of solar power from three projects in southern central Michigan expected to come online by 2023.

Under the agreements, Consumers would own and operate one facility, while purchasing power from the other two. The Michigan Public Service Commission still has to approve the plans.

Consumers, a CMS Energy Corp. subsidiary, plans to acquire the 150-MW Washtenaw solar project near Ann Arbor from Invenergy LLC upon completion of construction.

The utility plans to purchase 125 MW under a 20-year contract from the Jackson Solar project, under development by National Grid Renewables Development LLC. And Consumers will purchase the output of the 100-MW Cereal City Solar project, planned to be built in Calhoun County, Mich., by NextEra Energy Inc.

The three solar projects are a part of Consumers' plan to eliminate coal from its resource mix by 2025 and boost renewable energy on the way to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, the utility said in a press release.

National Grid PLC is the ultimate parent company of National Grid Renewables Development.
