China surpassed its own record for renewable energy capacity again in 2024, with 80GW of wind and 277GW of solar capacity installed in the world's second-largest economy, reports Recharge News, citing the National Energy Administration in China.
This means that capacity in the two segments increased by 18% and 45%, respectively, to total wind capacity of 520GW and a solar effect of 890GW, which means that China has reached the goal set by the country's president, Xi Jinping, in 2020 to reach a total capacity of 1.2TW ten years later.
That's five years ahead of schedule.
The previous year was also a record year for Chinese renewable energy installations, adding 76GW to wind capacity and 217GW to solar capacity.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has previously highlighted China's progress as the reason why the global target of tripling renewable power capacity by 2030 is still achievable.
Total power generation in China, which nevertheless continues to build new coal-fired power plants, increased by almost 15% to 3.35TWh in 2024.
