Acciona Uses Blockchain Technology At Two Storage Facilities In Spain

DS New Energy | Updated: Sep 30, 2018

Spanish renewable energy company Acciona Energía has become the first company to implement blockchain technology at two of its storage facilities in Spain.

The company has incorporated the STORe-CHAIN system at its wind power facility in Barásoain, as well as its solar plant in Tudela, located in Navarre, to guarantee that energy supplied into the grid is 100% renewable origin.

Acciona’s Barásoain facility is equipped with a storage system, which consists of two batteries, with one having fast-response 1MW/0.39MWh and another 0.7MW/0.7MWh. Both batteries are connected to a 3MW Nordex AW116/3000 wind turbine.

The solar plant in Tudela has a storage system with one 1MW/650kWh battery. Both these systems are managed and controlled by a software developed by Acciona Energía and are permanently integrated with the company’s Renewable Energy Control Center (CECOER).“We are very pleased to have taken this first step in a service that will surely grow in importance over the next few years.”

Acciona Energía innovation director Belén Linares said: “Certifying the renewable origin of energy is increasingly widespread, associated with the growth of the corporate procurement of green energy, and blockchain technology can greatly facilitate this service to clients in any part of the world.

“We are very pleased to have taken this first step in a service that will surely grow in importance over the next few years.”

The initiative is reported to be part of a programme called Greenchain, with which Acciona seeks to certify the renewable origin of all the company’s electricity production using blockchain technology.

Acciona’s STORe-Chain system manages data recorded by power counters in the wind and solar plants and matches the energy produced with renewable energy certificates.

The data stored in a blockchain platform can be accessed by a client when required.
